What girls and women want matters. On this #worldpopulationday we know that although they make up nearly 50% of the population, girls and women are often ignored and their rights are violated. We see from our work at POP that girls are kept out of school, they are denied the ability to make decisions about their sexual and reproductive health and they are at high risk of sexual exploitation and violence.
This year’s #WPD theme is ‘unleashing the power of gender equality – uplifting the voices of women and girls to unlock our world’s infinite possibilities’. When they are given opportunities, choices and agency over their own lives they can create more just and sustainable communities and enable their families to thrive.
When we provide support to local girls and women we help them to help themselves by making and delivering period pads to girls, thus giving them them much needed access to school every day as well was providing women with valuable skills.
If we can help to advance gender equality in our small way then it can help to realise the dreams of a whole community.
