Having a conversation about #menstruation is really important. Many people think that it is women’s and girls’ business but that is not the case. Men are fathers, husbands, sons and brothers and are aware of the inequality that biology places on their female relatives and friends, and want to be involved in the solution. In fact one of our current projects is run by a young man, Simon, who has been working with two groups of women in Busia and Kakamega and they are getting good results. He wants menstrual hygiene (MH) to be managed with dignity allowing girls and women to reach their full potential.
#menstrualhygieneday is dedicated to breaking taboos and raising awareness about the importance of good MH.There are 17 sustainable development goals and 3 of them are impacted by good MH.
Goal 3 Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages.
Goal 4 Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all
Goal 5 Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
For girls to be able to participate in all aspects of life and especially education then it is vital that they are not excluded due to the fact that they have a period and cannot afford sanitary protection.
